Spring Gardens – New Deputy Manager.  We have just appointed Mr. Iain McGregor RGN into the deputy manager’s post at Spring Gardens. Iain comes from a background of care of the elderly and is eminently qualified to assist the Company in the delivery and standards of its staff training as well as his day to day duties within the Home. I am sure you will all make him welcome and get to know him over the coming weeks – Posted 1 April 09

Tissue Viability  The development of the NHS educational workbook for pressure area care together with the launch of the new tissue viability web site www.tissueviabilityonline.com all helping to educate staff as to recognition, prevention and treatment of pressure area care. The ability to also access specialist NHS assistance and training within this area is of considerable benefit to the Company’s training plan for staff. These significant developments include an easy to use skin excoriation tool together with the ‘Scottish Adapted European Pressure Area Advisory Panel Grading Tool’ for use by staff. The bottom line is that recognition of problem areas and the correct treatment and prevention method all helps in the delivery of a high standard of care. – Posted 22 April 09

Dementia Training   Abercorn Care Limited has just signed up three RGN members of staff to undertake the 'Dementia Training Facilitator's Course' at Stirling University's Dementia Service Development Centre. This will, over the next six to nine month, allow for 24 care staff across the Homes to complete specific dementia training which follows a 'best practice' regime and meets with SVQ qualification.

Work in the Homes You may have already become aware of the significant work being undertaken in Viewpark and Spring Gardens to replace the existing fire protection systems, including emergency lighting, smoke detectors, extinguishers and signage. This is being done in conjunction with maintenance to the Homes' decor and structural aspects of the buildings. Residents will also start to see improvements with the changes to carpets, furnishings and other household items. Viewpark has just been fitted with a completely new central heating boiler system that better meets the homes hot water and heating demands.

Tissue Viability   All the beds in Spring Gardens & Viewpark have now been fitted with new permaflex mattresses which help reduce the risk of tissue damage to residents. Abercorn Nursing Home already has these mattresses fitted to its beds.

Medication Management  Abercorn Care Limited has changed over from its previous pharmacy supplier to a new service, Inch Pharmacy, 102 Walter Scott Avenue Edinburgh. The reason for the change has come about by trying to improve standards, reduce risk of medication being incorrectly handled and better meet the Home's needs for the future. On-site training is being given to better understand the systems and the staff will work to our own policies and a set of Standard Operating Procedures to ensure correct medication management.
